Hybrid car
A hybrid car has at least two power sources - either petrol and electricity or diesel and electricity. Each power source can power the vehicle individually or in combination with the other. Many hybrid vehicles can store the energy normally wasted when braking, and re-use it again when accelerating. This means less fuel is burned so CO2 emissions can be reduced.

Flex-fuel car
A flex-fuel car is one that has been designed and manufactured to run on high blends of bio-ethanol, such as E85, but is also capable of running on petrol.

Electric car
Electricity can be used to power vehicles and is generally taken from the national grid and stored in batteries. Electric vehicles have no tailpipe emissions but electricity generation by power stations does produce CO2. There are currently no fully electric cars available for general purchase in the UK but there are some electric quadricycles.

Quadricycles
Quadricycles are small, light four wheeled vehicles. They are by definition lighter and less powerful than cars and meet different European emissions and safety standards to cars. CO2 emissions information is not available for quadricycles because it does not currently form part of quadricycle Type Approval testing.
